The proprietor (Palin), Mr. Wensleydale, appears to have nothing in stock, not even Cheddar, "the single most popular cheese in the world". The sketch was originally featured in Episode 7 of Series 3 of "Monty Python's Flying Circus", first broadcast on 30 November 1972. It was also featured in the 2014 reunion shows at The O2, London as a code to the Dead Parrot sketch.
