This BBC News report-style sketch is about “another British expedition, attempting to be the first man to successfully climb the north face of the Uxbridge Road”. The sketch opens on a close-up of one of the climbers (Eric Idle), fully kitted out in mountain climbing gear, moving slowly up the “north face of the Uxbridge Road”. The camera zooms out to reveal that he, and his fellow climbers, are actually “climbing” horizontally along a wide pavement. To illustrate the progress of this “major assault on the Uxbridge Road” we cut to a studio shot of a model of the Uxbridge Road, with the climbers’ route marked out in white and various pins to show the climbers’ camps along the route, and “Chris” explains the route and the trials of the journey so far. John Cleese, a BBC reporter, then interviews the leader of the expedition Bert Tagg (Chapman), “a local headmaster and mother of three” while he crawls along the pavement. The sketch ends with the climbers coming “unstuck” from the Uxbridge Road, falling back down the pavement.
“Climbing the North Face of the Uxbridge Road” premiered on 30 November 1972 in Series 3, Episode 7 of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”.
