‘The Bishop’, which stars Terry Jones as The Reverend E.P. Nesbitt, a crime-fighting bishop attempting to stop the deaths of various clergymen, is a parody of ‘The Saint’, a 1960s British crime-drama series starring Roger Moore as Simon Templar, enemy of gangland.

Always arriving a moment too late to save them, the Bishop, flanked by his entourage of four tough-looking priests, tries and fails to save Rev. Grundy (Graham Chapman) from an exploding pulpit, Rev. Nuke (John Cleese) from a bomb disguised as a baby he is Christening, a priest from being crushed by a sixteen-ton weight, a priest (Michael Palin) from being hung by the rope that’s attached to the bell he is ringing, and a priest (Graham Chapman) from being shot by a cannon coming out of an open grave. "We was...too late" effectively serves as the Bishop's catch-phrase. Palin also appears as a character called “Devious” a sleazy insurance agent who has swindled a priest played by Eric Idle.

‘The Bishop’ premiered 20 October 1970 in Series 2, Episode 4 of ‘Monty Python's Flying Circus’.
