“The Vocational Guidance Counsellor” premiered on 21 December 1969 in Series 1, Episode 10 of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”. The sketch features Michael Palin as the “tedious, stuffy and boring” Herbert Anchovy, a chartered accountant, visiting a vocational guidance counsellor played by John Cleese. The counsellor tells Mr. Anchovy the results of the aptitude test he took previously, which have concluded that the career Mr. Anchovy is most suited to is, in fact, chartered accountancy. Mr. Anchovy protests that he is already a chartered accountant and he finds the job dull. The counsellor explains that that is exactly why he suits the job, because he is an extremely dull person and while this would be a drawback in other professions it makes him perfectly suited to chartered accountancy. Mr. Anchovy goes on to explain that his dream is to be a lion tamer. However, after establishing that Mr. Anchovy has mistaken an anteater for a lion and the counsellor explains just how fierce lions really are, Mr. Anchovy talks himself out of a career change and the counsellor delivers a public service announcement about the dangers of chartered accountancy. Palin and Cleese reprieved their roles as “Mr. Anchovy” and “Counsellor” in the 2014 reunion shows, “Monty Python Live (mostly) – One Down Five to Go”, with Mr. Anchovy revealing he really wants to be a lumberjack, seguing into the “Lumberjack Song”.

The sketch is credited with creating the popular stereotype of accountants being boring. In 2005, the Financial Times reported that it still haunts the profession."
